In this preview, we’re going to be taking a look at Ale & Tale Tavern, a first-person, cooperative open-world fantasy simulation game where the player is able to fish, hunt, forage, and engage in combat, all whilst running a tavern. This game has undergone an array of improvements since its release two years ago, and today, we’re going to go over some of the details and talk about whether it’s worth keeping your eyes on it going forward.

Key Takeaways

  • Co-op open-world tavern sim: cook, brew, hunt, fight, and run a chaotic, charming pub with friends or on your own.
  • Charming art and decor, but grindy resource systems, clunky menus and repetitive combat can frustrate solo play.
  • Devs actively update it with dungeons and events – cute, cozy, and great value.

What is Ale & Tale Tavern?

Ale & Tale Tavern was developed by Scienart Games, and was first released in 2024. It is a hybrid of genres, ranging from open-world fantasy and tavern management to action-adventure, survival, and RPG questing. I have been playing Ale & Tale since its release, and each time I boot it up, I’m taken back to the simpler days of Diner Dash—with the inclusion of zombies, hunting your own food, and exploration, of course.

While some games of this variety can feel like a repetitive grind, Ale & Tale Tavern solves that issue by allowing for co-op gameplay. Players can divide tasks up amongst themselves. One could cook and brew, while another serves customers (or shoos drunkards out of their tavern with a broom), and a third friend hunts and forages. If you think you would enjoy the cooperative, frantic teamwork of games like Overcooked mixed with the survival, combat, and exploration elements of games like Stardew Valley, Ale & Tale Tavern captures that feeling perfectly.

Story and Setting

Ale & Tale Tavern takes place in an enchanting, open fantasy world. Your tavern is nestled right on the edge of a forest brimming with comedic, charming characters, beautiful scenery, and adorable wildlife. The immediate area around the tavern is filled with fruit trees, edible mushrooms, and dangerous creatures such as wolves, bears, and bloodthirsty zombies.

Unlike many simulation games, the protagonist does not inherit a property after a grandparent’s death, and instead is fulfilling their own lifelong dream of running the world’s most successful tavern. Ale & Tale Tavern does not have deep, meaningful lore or a fascinating backstory that it is being built off of. Alternatively, the game focuses more on small quests and quirky comedic interactions with characters such as a talking cow, a mermaid, and a character who lives inside an oversized pumpkin.

This story setting allows you to move at your own pace and offers the choice of a sole focus of running your tavern, or being an adventurer.

Gameplay and Impressions

As mentioned, the heart of the game is split between hospitality management and survival. Your responsibilities range from washing dishes and decorating your tavern to hunting monsters and everything in between. Progression itself doesn’t always feel equally gratifying, with certain things unlocking automatically and without fanfare, rather than through active upgrades. Solo players may find themselves burned out from the heavy grinding needed to gather specific enemy-dropped ingredients.

While the game has plenty of intelligent quips, the jokes can be repetitive – such as the scarecrow who lives behind the tavern including a joke about his “magic weed” in each line of dialogue, which makes talking to NPCs feel stale. That being said, the character designs are original and often feel like a breath of fresh air.

Navigating menus and moving through dialogue can be cumbersome, and the voice lines of NPCs continue to play even when you have walked away and ended the conversation with them. Active quests are displayed on the upper-right side of the screen, which makes it easy to keep track of your current tasks. The farming system is easy to maneuver, and cooking is just involved enough that it doesn’t feel overwhelming while you’re juggling everything else but isn’t as simple as a quick button click.

Water is a resource that is used in brews, cooking recipes, and dishwashing, and the system feels slightly punishing. A 15-use-capacity bucket is hard to justify when the dishwasher uses 10 and recipes use up to 10, leading to making quite a few trips out to the well for water. I had a similar issue with plates, bowls, and mugs, as these items cannot be stacked, and with limited inventory slots, that can be a nuisance and result in a lot of running back and forth to storage chests.

Combat is frequent, and a little repetitive. There is not an in-depth armor system, and despite the game being combat-heavy, there are only a couple of weapon choices – all of which break easily and have no final form.

However, despite these quirks, Ale & Tale Tavern is still fun, and the ability to decorate your tavern and explore the world openly makes these issues much easier to stomach. Even while being aware that I do not generally care for the combat system, I still frequently come back to the game, crank up the volume, and let the soundtrack play while I create medieval treats and brews for townsfolk.

Visual Impressions

Visually, Ale & Tale Tavern is reminiscent of World of Warcraft – with vibrant, rustic fantasy-style elements, and an enchanting art style. That being said, the game’s graphical settings are incredibly limited, and can suffer from a host of performance issues on lower-end hardware.

The tavern is warm and architecturally beautiful, and offers varied decor from paintings to candles and decorative shelves. The player is able to customize their character, though the only time we see said character is when the player dies during combat. The customization options are vast, and if one so wanted to, they could serve ale and fight bears while dressed in lingerie, with a bucket atop their head.

Ale & Tale Tavern boasts five distinct biomes, all of which offer different resources and aesthetics. From beaches, to caves, to swamps, there’s no shortage of picturesque scenery to enjoy.

Final Thoughts

It is easy to tell that Ale & Tale Tavern was a labor of love. The devs frequently respond to player comments on Reddit, Steam, and other forums; the game hosts holiday-themed events and decor, just to incorporate a ‘real world’ touch; and the team still makes updates – the most recent of which was a massive addition of procedural dungeons that allow for new gear and items, fresh combat, and endless exploration.

If you’re looking for a new adventure and have always dreamed of running a tavern in a fantasy world – or simply want something to do in your spare time – Ale & Tale Tavern is a fantastic option. It has its flaws, but it’s a charming game with plenty to do.

All in all, you should definitely take the time to check out Ale & Tale Tavern. The game’s base price is $15, however, it has been seen going on sale with some regularity.
