Of all the video game properties available, I wasn’t expecting Sea of Thieves to be one to get a film adaptation, but there you go.
Xbox’s online multiplayer pirate adventure is indeed coming to the big screen, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
According to the publication, a live-action Sea of Thieves movie is planned, with Destin Daniel Cretton set to produce it through his company Hisako Films. No other names are attached to the project.
Destin Daniel Cretton is best known for his directorial work on Marvel films like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer at Xbox, comments on the project.
“The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community […] So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it’s not, Who are the main characters? What’s the plot? It’s a super social game, but there’s a tone to Sea of Thieves. It’s built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that’s going to be like.”
It’ll be interesting to see how this will take shape on the big screen. I imagine it’ll simply be a light-hearted pirate adventure movie with an ensemble cast, most likely aimed at a family audience.
It sounds like it’s years away, though, so we’ll have to wait and see how it comes together.
