Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Best: The combat system is one of the coolest things they’ve done in a while
We’ve only gotten two Legends games thus far, but we have seen enough to know that the subseries is defined by pretty significant changes to the Pokémon formula. Z-A’s biggest shake-up is its real-time combat system that replaces PP with cooldowns, and completely changes how you strategize and move through a fight. It’s not just a Rock-Paper-Scissors game anymore, as you now have to worry about positioning and timing, all while making sure you, the trainer, are also out of the way of any incoming attacks. Z-A’s battles are often quicker than those of its turn-based counterparts, requiring you to strategize and react on your feet and to develop an intimate understanding of not only the damage you output, but how your attacks move through the battlefield. It’s one of the coolest experiments Game Freak has put on a cartridge, and the thought of going back to the standard turn-based battle system in a future game kind of bums me out.
Worst: Waiting for cooldowns in the overworld
As part of the real-time combat, all your Pokémon’s attacks have a cooldown, rather than a set number of uses before you need to use an Ether or head to the Pokémon Center. This all makes sense in the context of battles, but when the game uses this same system for the equivalent of HM moves that help you get through obstacles in the overworld, you spend an annoying amount of time waiting for your partner to be able to smash a rock, wash away some grime, or burn some pesky weeds. In theory, the game doing away with cooldowns when you’re not in battle could solve the issue, but unless Game Freak implements that, you and your Pokémon are just gonna stare at each other for a little bit between moves. Talk about the weather, I guess?
