Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, has committed a huge $12.7 billion investment in the country by 2030, even as it cites “aggressive” growth plans driven by rising demand for cloud and AI infrastructure.

The company sees India as a key pillar in its global expansion strategy, with strong momentum across enterprises, startups and digital platforms.

In an interaction with CNBC-TV18 on the sidelines of the AWS Summit 2026 in Bengaluru, Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President, AWS Infrastructure Services, said India is among a select group of countries where AWS operates multiple regions.

He said that both Mumbai and Hyderabad regions are fully scaled, enabling customers to deploy applications with high resilience and low latency.

Kalyanaraman also pointed to the rapid pace of cloud and AI adoption in India, calling the level of innovation “staggering”. With over 7 million people already trained in cloud skills and increasing investments in AI infrastructure and talent, AWS expects India to play a central role not just as a growth market, but also as a global talent and innovation hub.

Edited excerpts:How critical is India in AWS’s global infrastructure roadmap?

India is a key market for us and among a handful of countries where we operate more than one region. We started with Mumbai and expanded to Hyderabad, both fully featured regions with multiple availability zones. This allows customers to run applications across regions for latency and disaster recovery, while maintaining high standards of security, availability and performance.

Are you looking to expand your data centre footprint further in India?

India is a huge growth market for us. We are seeing strong adoption across sectors, from digital platforms to enterprises. We have outlined an investment of $12.7 billion in India by 2030, and we have aggressive growth plans as we continue to respond to customer demand.

Is India emerging as a talent hub for AWS infrastructure?

We have trained over 7 million people in India in cloud skills, and we are continuing to invest in talent development, especially in areas like gen AI. India has a strong talent base, and capabilities built here are increasingly being exported globally. Our investments in upskilling are clearly paying off.

Are Indian enterprises moving fast enough on cloud and AI?

The pace of innovation in India is quite staggering. Across sectors, enterprises are rapidly adopting cloud and driving innovation. The energy in the ecosystem right now is very strong.

How do you view the AI opportunity in India?

India has structural advantages with strong energy infrastructure, access to land, and a large skilled workforce. There is clear alignment between industry and government on the importance of AI infrastructure, and that is encouraging.

How is AWS thinking about AI infrastructure investments and funding?

Investing in high-growth areas is part of Amazon’s DNA. Globally, we are committing tens of billions of dollars towards infrastructure, including AI. In India, the $12.7 billion investment is part of that broader push. AWS continues to see strong growth, with a $142 billion revenue run rate and accelerating momentum.

How do you see the geopolitical environment impacting India?

We focus on what we can control, which is serving customers effectively. India remains a strong market with a robust workforce, and we are committed to investing here over the long term.
