Airfares May Rise as Oil Prices Climb Amid Iran Conflict

Airline ticket prices could increase if the conflict involving Iran lead to further increases in oil prices, airline ticket costs are likely to rise accordingly. Given that airlines depend extensively on jet fuel, any escalation in crude oil prices tends to exert direct and immediate upward pressure on their operational expenses.

Oil prices surged after military strikes involving the United States and Israel. At one point, crude briefly moved above $100 per barrel, a level not seen in several years. Even though prices eased slightly afterward, the spike still raises concerns across the aviation industry.

Fuel typically ranks as the second-largest expense for airlines after labor. When prices rise sharply, carriers often review their ticket pricing strategies. Scott Kirby, chief executive of United Airlines, said sustained increases in fuel prices could affect the airline’s financial performance in the coming months.

However, airlines do not always pass higher costs directly to passengers. Ticket prices depend heavily on travel demand. If economic uncertainty causes fewer people to book trips, airlines may hold fares steady even as expenses climb.

The ongoing conflict has significantly impacted airline operations within the affected region. According to data from aviation analytics provider Cirium, approximately 50,000 flights have been canceled since late February as carriers increasingly avoid specific airspace areas due to safety risks.

In response, several airlines, including Qantas Airways, SAS, and Air New Zealand, have adjusted their fare structures. These companies have linked recent fare increases on certain routes primarily to rising fuel expenses. Should elevated oil prices persist over a prolonged period, airlines are expected to either raise ticket prices further or reduce the frequency of less profitable flights. This dual approach could lead to fewer travel options and higher costs for passengers.
