Sony and developer closures have gone hand in hand recently, and the PS5 hardware maker still isn’t done. Yet another closure under PlayStation’s wing has been confirmed, but this time, it’s not a games studio; it’s on a much smaller scale.
The company acquired a tournament website called Repeat.gg way back in July 2022. This purchase went pretty under the radar at the time, but it was part of PlayStation’s push into the hardcore fighting scene, which also saw it buy the Evo fighting tournament.
It has since backed away from that event and sold its stake last year. Now, the Repeat.gg website is going under. “After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to wind down the platform,” reads a post to the official website.
Actually browsing the website, you wouldn’t be able to tell PlayStation owns it, because there is virtually no mention of the firm or any branding relating to Sony anywhere. However, this deal was very much a thing, as vice president of global competitive gaming Steven Roberts explained at the time:
“Together with the talented Repeat.gg team, we’re excited to explore more ways for players to engage in competitive gaming and expand the breadth of our esports offerings. This is just the start of our journey and we look forward to sharing more updates with our community in the future.”
