New Delhi: In a move aimed at addressing gaps in specialised care for women’s cancers, Apollo Athenaa has launched what it describes as India’s first fully integrated gynae-oncology and robotic surgery ecosystem. The initiative seeks to streamline treatment for gynaecological cancers by bringing early detection, advanced diagnostics, robotic-assisted surgery and post-treatment support within a single care framework.
Gynaecological cancers continue to pose a significant health burden in India. According to Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022 estimates, cancers affecting the female reproductive system are among the leading cancers among Indian women. Data from the Indian Council of Medical Research indicates that the country records over 1.71 lakh new cases of female genital cancers annually, with nearly 86,000 deaths, highlighting the substantial mortality burden associated with these diseases.
Despite the high incidence, access to specialised and coordinated care remains limited in many parts of the country. Treatment pathways are often fragmented across multiple providers, which can delay diagnosis and specialist intervention—factors known to significantly influence cancer outcomes.
The newly introduced ecosystem at Apollo Athenaa aims to bridge this gap by integrating multiple stages of cancer care within a single system. The model brings together screening, precision diagnostics, robotic and minimally invasive surgical procedures, fertility-preserving treatments and rehabilitation support, enabling patients to receive coordinated care without navigating multiple institutions.
Healthcare experts note that robotic and minimally invasive surgical approaches are increasingly being adopted in oncology as they can help reduce surgical complications, shorten hospital stays and support faster recovery, while maintaining precision during complex procedures.
Commenting on the initiative, Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group, said,”The new ecosystem reflects the need for specialised care models designed specifically for women’s cancers.”
She noted that bringing multidisciplinary expertise into a coordinated framework can improve clinical consistency, surgical precision and continuity of care across the patient journey.
As part of the expansion, the centre has also strengthened its clinical team with the appointment of gynae-oncology specialists Rupinder Sekhon as Principal Lead, Gynae-Oncology and Robotic Surgery, and Amita Naithani as Senior Consultant in the same specialty. Both specialists bring experience in advanced robotic and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
