With all the momentum going Carolina’s way in the third period of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Hurricanes ended up on the right side of a video review after the puck ended up in the back of their net.

With the score tied 2-2, Vegas Golden Knights forward Ivan Barbashev broke free in the Carolina zone and was stopped on his first shot attempt before securing the rebound and going for a wraparound goal.

Barbashev was initially stopped by Frederick Andersen before poking at the puck beneath the Hurricanes’ netminder. But even though he appeared to direct the go-ahead score into the net, the officials immediately waved no goal.

Golden Knights head coach John Tortorella opted to use his coach’s challenge to try to overturn the call on the ice, claiming that Andersen carried the puck over the goal line and wasn’t pushed by a Vegas player.

The league elaborated after the game, which the Hurricanes ended up winning in overtime, explaining that the play was ruled goaltender interference as a result of Barbashev’s stick.

“(The referee) waived it (off) immediately,” NHL’s director of officiating Stephen Walkom told reporters. “He believed that it was under the goalie and the Vegas player went after the puck and interfered with the goalie and his ability to freeze the puck and waived it off immediately.”

As a result of the no-goal call, the Hurricanes were awarded a power play, where Jordan Staal scored to take their first lead of the game.

However, Mark Stone’s late equalizer sent Game 2 to the extra frame.
