Steve Payne has been selected to succeed Peter Rothwell as KPMG’s group head of banking. He will lead the firm’s banking practices in the UK and Switzerland from the start of October.
Payne commented, “My time at KPMG has so far has been hugely rewarding. We’ve put a lot of work into building our tech capabilities, forming valuable alliance partners and of course, attracting and supporting the best people. It’ll be a privilege to continue to build on Peter’s legacy, creating a business that can sustain, challenge and strengthen the world’s banking industry.”
Joining the Big Four firm as a partner in 2022, Payne arrived from PA Consulting. He had spent two years as a partner there, working in PA’s Stockholm office – and was previously also a managing partner in financial services for Deloitte’s Swedish outpost.
With other experience in the professional services space amounting to close to three decades in banking, capital markets, and investment management, Payne has also worked in Singapore, and America, before returning to the UK. He will officially take on the role of banking sector leader on 1 October – in both the UK and Switzerland, with KPMG’s member firms there having merged in 2024.
Karim Haji, global head of financial services for KPMG, said, “Steve has made great strides to connect teams across geographies and services to support some of our biggest and most complex clients. He’s an energetic and pragmatic leader who brings a huge amount of value to our people and our clients.”
Payne will take over from Peter Rothwell, who will remain a partner with KPMG, and returns to focus full time on client delivery. A period of handover begins immediately.
Haji added, “I thank Peter for his outstanding leadership of the banking sector over the last three years. Peter has been a constant source of clarity and calm through some of the most turbulent markets of a generation. He leaves the team in good shape and in good hands.”
