Congressional Democrats are accusing Republicans of throwing their support behind Democratic primary candidates viewed as flawed and beatable.

Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger told Axios that he views the move as unsurprising given that Democrats had deployed similar tactics during the Biden years, adding that Democrats “probably … taught the Republicans a lesson” by doing so.

One of the more high-profile examples has taken place in Texas’ 35th district where a PAC reportedly tied to Republican interests has spent more than $1 million supporting Maureen Galindo in the Democratic primary.

Galindo was been strongly condemned by Democrats over comments deemed antisemitic. In one social media post Galindo wrote she would turn, “Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking,” Fox News reported. “It will also be a castration processing center for pedophiles, which will probably be most of the Zionists.”

Galindo was been largely denounced by Democratic Party leadership. “This vile language by her is disqualifying and has no place in American politics, and certainly not in the Democratic Party,” Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York and Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington said in a statement.

The PAC that supported Galindo is called Lead Left and reportedly is tied to Republican interests. Meanwhile, Real Change PAC has dumped money into New Jersey’s 7th, Maine’s 2nd and California’s 22nd districts. In all cases, the PAC challenged more moderate Democrats and bolstered their primary opponents, Axios reported. She ended up losing her primary in late May.

In another instance, the website reported that Progressive Champions PAC spent at least $1.5 million in opposition to Cait Conley, who widely is considered a centrist.

Axios reported that both of those PACs have the same bank listed in FEC filings and that both use the same compliance filing software that has been used by Republicans in the past.

“They’re going into Democratic primaries and literally trying to boost the most extreme candidates and oppose the (moderate) Blue Dog-endorsed candidates that, if they win, are going to beat the Republicans in the general,” California Representative Adam Gray told the New York Times when discussing the matter.
