Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as Labour Party leader, setting the stage for a contest to choose both his successor and the country’s next prime minister.
Speaking outside Downing Street, Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and asked Labour’s governing body to begin the process of selecting a new leader. He will remain prime minister until the contest is completed, with Labour aiming to have a replacement in place before Parliament returns in September.
The announcement comes after weeks of unease inside Labour, particularly following poor election results and frustration over several policy U-turns. Talk has already shifted to who might take over, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham emerging as a leading contender. He confirmed on Monday that he will run, and has already picked up backing from former Health Secretary Wes Streeting.
Starmer used his resignation speech to defend his record in government and thanked his family for their support during his time in office. He said he would work to ensure a smooth transition and give his successor his full backing. Whoever takes over will inherit a government facing pressure to deliver stronger economic growth, improve public services, and rebuild support ahead of the next general election
