Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred Review. ⚔️ Systems revamped, classes tested, and the endgame fixed. Is this the ultimate game changer?
Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred: Umbral Chains Build Mechanics
The build centers around using the crowd-controlling Umbral Chains ability to slow down groups of enemies while dealing damage over time and finishing them off using other skills. Rather than rushing through and mowing down mobs, this build focuses more on a methodical approach, tying up enemies with powerful slows before moving in for the kill.
Already a powerful tool for crowd control with its base skill, Umbral Chains can be upgraded to slow down enemies further and deal burst damage. This makes it a powerful core skill that is useful in any type of situation.
Since the Abyss skills of the Warlock have the ability to debuff enemies in multiple ways, the damage dealt can be increased substantially. With the massive slowdown and the ability to easily execute enemies using the recast ability of Abyssal Torrent, this build provides a steadfast and reliable way to play the Warlock class.

Gameplay and Skill Tree
Whether you are facing off against hordes of enemies or fighting a boss, the build works effectively by allowing the Warlock to easily break down chained up enemies. Going into details for the skill tree:
Basic Skill
For this build, the basic skill Doom is a great tool as it will allow you to easily Hex enemies. Hex increases Abyss skill damage taken by enemies up to 15% based on their missing health and can be stacked up to 4 times, multiplying your damage output substantially the lower their health goes. With the Contagion upgrade, Doom has the ability to spread the Hex to other enemies, making it more effective when fighting groups. Since the Doom skill is not a ranged skill, you will need to get relatively close to your enemies. If you prefer to stay at range, you can use the Jailer upgrade instead of Contagion, which allows you to cast Doom on the ground from a distance.
Core Skill
The core skill for this build is Umbral Chains, which the build is named after. This skill will link up enemies with a chain while dealing damage over time and inflicting Hex upon them, in addition to slowing them down by 30%. The skill costs 35 Wrath, so you will want to alternate between Doom and Umbral Chains to make sure you do not run out. The Hexing from the chains combined with the Doom basic skill makes it so that you are able to apply the debuff consistently.
Archfiend Skill
While the Infernal Breath is a Hellfire skill, you can upgrade it with Abyssal Torrent to turn it into an Abyss skill with the ability to recast. This allows the demon to fire off 3 blasts while also adding the ability to execute Hexed enemies.
This is a great tool to finish off enemies chained up and Hexed by your Umbral Chains.
Ultimate
For our Ultimate skill, Apocalypse provides a great way to deal massive amounts of damage to easily clear out Elites and bosses. While the Hellfire version excels at clearing out mobs, using the Abyss variant with the Minefield upgrade will help deal with bosses much faster.
The Abyssal Minefield summons mines that arm after 0.8 seconds around you, and you can lead the boss over the mines to deal massive amounts of damage.
Mobility
You’ll want to grab Nether Step, as it will greatly improve your survivability by allowing you to swiftly get away from danger by stepping through the shadows. This can act as a “get out of jail” option if you find yourself surrounded, as it will allow you to pass through enemies and emerge at a different location, functioning similar to a blink. With the Gloomwalker upgrade, you will also be immune to attacks and crowd control while in the shadow realm, making it easier to get away from danger and reposition yourself.
Soul Shards
The Warlock’s special mechanic allows you to summon a special demon through soul shards, and this build benefits from using the Ritualist Shard. This will enable you to summon Valloch, who will increase the damage of Doom and Umbral Chains by increasing Occult skill damage by 3.5% per stack of Overpower.
Passive
Each shard can have a passive shard equipped, and the Abyssal Fragment will enhance the Hex of your Abyss skills by letting it stack up to 4 times. At full stacks, 25% of Occult damage skills dealt to the target will be dealt again after 4 seconds, consuming the Hex.
Paragon Boards
Regarding the Paragon Boards, you will want to focus on boards that increase your Occult Skills damage, as the main tools of this build belong to the Occult class. Combined with Valloch’s ability to generate Overpower, the Chaos Board will double your damage output, as your Occult skills will deal 100% increased damage while you have Overpower active.
Next, going for the Overmind board will increase your damage output further, as it increases the damage of Abyss skills against crowd-controlled enemies by 45%, and up to 65% against Elites.
Following this, if you want to increase your damage even higher, you can choose to focus on the Greater Hex board and its Legendary Node. This will allow you to deal 75% increased damage against enemies that are debuffed by Hex, Vulnerable, or Weakened.
This Legendary Node also gives defensive value, as it will reduce the damage debuffed enemies deal to you by 25%, which is a significant boost at the higher Torment tiers.
Charms
With the Lord of Hatred Expansion, the Charms system is making a return in Diablo 4, and these can enhance your build even further.
While this particular build does not require a charm set to be effective, Horazon’s Chains can help with resource management by increasing the Dominance generation of Valloch. With the full 5-piece set, you will be able to summon all of the Soul Shard demons and gain their bonuses for a short duration.
Mapping and Boss Fights
The Umbral Chains skill is great for keeping enemies at bay and executing Hexed enemies while they are slowed down. Thanks to its massive crowd control abilities, you can comfortably clear dungeons while mapping without needing to worry about enemies catching you. Since you will also be able to redirect your Infernal Breath demon with the recast, you do not need to worry about placing it in the wrong direction either.
When fighting Unstoppable enemies or bosses, the Abyss Minefield will help deal with any enemy that gets too close, as the mines can deal huge bursts of damage. While your damage output from the Umbral Chains damage-over-time combined with the Infernal Breath is quite high, the Ultimate will allow you to take away huge chunks of the boss’s life bar, making it an invaluable tool.
Final Tips & Gearing
Regarding the gear, you’ll want to look out for Intelligence and Wisdom, along with cost reduction and cooldown reduction to help with resource management. Any lifesteal through life on hit or kill is also helpful for sustain, as the Warlock class is relatively squishy.
Since you will be continuously attacking with this build, these stats will help you survive most attacks from regular enemies. Stats that give bonuses to skills and movement speed are also generally helpful when putting this build together.
In order to maximize your damage output potential, you will want to look for gear with All Damage or Shadow Damage multipliers. You can also socket Amethyst gems into your weapon to increase your shadow damage, which will bring up your damage output even further.
The main drawback of this build is that it does not have a lot of wide area attacks that can clear the screen apart from the Ultimate skill. You will need to be careful not to draw too many enemies and get yourself cornered. In such instances, the Nether Step can help you get out of tricky situations and move to a more favorable position where your Infernal Breath and recast blasts can take care of your enemies.
You can add to your damage output using Abyss skills by tempering on bonuses to Damage over Time, which will help increase the damage from your Umbral Chains.
Alternatively, you can tamper on Abyss Damage or Occult Damage onto your weapons and hand pieces to increase the damage of all your skills. Equipping a one-handed weapon and a focus provides a chance for a higher bonus compared to using a two-handed weapon.
Tempering movement speed bonus affixes onto boots and amulets will help with the clearing speed during dungeon mapping and help with repositioning and dodging during boss fights. If you find yourself struggling with dodging attacks or simply want to focus less on managing cooldowns, tempering on cooldown reduction onto the rings will help, as it will enable you to use Nether Step more frequently.
For Legendary Aspects, the Aspect of Calamity will help, especially when fighting bosses, as it can increase your Critical Strike chance against Hexed enemies by up to 20%. If you have gear with high Shadow Resistance stats, the Aspect of Fathomless Dark can help you add to your damage by giving your Abyss skills 80% of your shadow resistance damage reduction as increased damage.
Another aspect that can increase your damage output is the Bane-Link Aspect, as it will slow down Hexed enemies when they become Vulnerable or inflict them with Vulnerable when you slow them.
Since the build will be hexing and slowing down everything with the Umbral Chains, this legendary aspect provides a reliable way to inflict Vulnerable onto your enemies, making them take more damage. Since the build will be rotating between different Occult skills consistently, the Aspect of Heresy also provides an excellent option to supplement your overall damage output.
In terms of survivability, the Misanthropic Aspect will benefit this build immensely as Valloch will be the only active demon for the majority of the time. While you will be using the Infernal Breath to summon a demon and execute Hexed foes, the skill has a cooldown and is reliant on Dominance, so the extra Maximum Life gained can provide extra survivability in such cases.
Finally, do not feel forced to play on the highest Torment level as soon as possible. While the higher tiers offer a gradual increase in the rarity of crafting materials and loot drops, it does not always guarantee the highest power level items. Often, playing on lower Torments yields the same overall experience and Paragon points per hour simply because your clear speed is dramatically faster.
If you are struggling to survive, consider reducing the Torment tier to farm for more materials to temper and masterwork your gear before attempting higher Torments and farming for Ancestrals.
The Helltides and the Infernal Hordes endgame events provide excellent options to farm for your drops quickly and can help you arm for the higher tiers.
