The upcoming Pokemon Go 10th Anniversary Go Fest on July 11th and 12th is being billed as free, but there are some important asterisks to consider in light of the game’s Kalos Tour-era updates and Niantic/Scopely’s community event operation, which have significantly hurt local POGO communities. Let’s take a look at what we can expect and why we should be cautious.
In Niantic’s announcement this week, the company says that Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Metwo Y will have separate energy and that it will be applying the same logic to Charizard and other future multi-Mega ‘mon at a later date, like Mega Lucario and Mega Lucario Z. At least for Charizard, Niantic is saying you’ll receive equal energy for the X and Y forms based on the amount you currently have, but that doesn’t mean Niantic will be that kind for future splits.
Next are the exclusive moves. Psytrike for Mega Metwo Y isn’t a big deal since this move has been released before, but the Fast Move, Counter, for Mega Mewtwo X is new. Remember, Metwo was released all the way back in August 2017. Elite TMs generally allow us to keep our old ‘mon relevant in terms of moves, but since Niantic has denied this treatment in the past, there’s fear that the team may do this again with Counter.
Niantic also says that “Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are exceptionally powerful Pokémon that require much more Mega Energy than other Pokémon to Mega Evolve” but that Mewtwos caught from raids “will also have at least one Mega Level already unlocked and can be Mega Evolved without the initial energy cost,” and “if you’re lucky, it might even be at Mega Level 2 or 3!” What this means is that you will be better off raiding your bidoof off trying to get a new Mewtwo during the event rather than investing in one you’ve probably already invested in.
And all of this assumes you can even do the new Mega Raids, which Niantic destabilized before its last main event. While I don’t play as frequently as before, I can’t recall much praise given to the system since the event ended. In fact, I know players who avoid interacting with the new system specifically because they were hoarding the new raid currency in case this very Mega Mewtwo scenario came to fruition.
Next, the Mega Raid changes mean that players will need to plan ahead more so than they usually do for this event because there’s essentially a minimum player requirement on the Super Mega Raids to break the shields, and that number hasn’t been announced. A trash Mega like Victreebel needed eight, while pseudo-legendary Mega Dragonite required 10, so I would think Mega Mewtwo would need at least 12.
Niantic/Scopely has also repeatedly dropped information on last-minute meet ups, which siphons players away from their usual communities to wherever the heck the devs want them. That means that even if you plan to meet at the local park with 20 people for Go Fest, a single tweet may divert several of them to FOMO, and in my experience, that can cascade down until you have maybe a couple of players who actually do show up for the original event.
Finally, the sunset announcement for Peridot isn’t exactly filling POGO players with contentment about the stability of the company or the game.
So while the event itself may be free, players can surely expect some kind of add-on, Battle Pass, annoying restriction, or other reason to “encourage” them to spend on the event. Count on it.
