It feels like there’s more enthusiasm for PS5’s upcoming ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call Black Ops 2, due out in July, than the brand-new Modern Warfare 4.
At least, that’s the case on social media platform X (or Twitter), where Treyarch’s post about the ports has attracted more than 158k likes at the time of writing, compared to Modern Warfare 4’s reveal trailer, which has 78k likes.
The engagement is higher, too: the Black Ops ports have 5.7k replies and 35k retweets, while Modern Warfare 4’s reveal has 3.7k replies and 16k retweets.
I wouldn’t take this to mean these Black Ops ports are going to sell better than Modern Warfare 4, as obviously it’s a specific type of person who’s engaging with social media like this. It does speak to the growing sense of nostalgia within the Call of Duty community, though.
I’m particularly surprised to see these Black Ops ports will feature all of the original PS3 modes, including single player, multiplayer, and co-op. In fact, that little detail alone has also attracted 39k likes.
Considering these games are already available on Xbox via backwards compatibility, it’s clear Activision is only making these to sell them to fans playing on PS5 and PS4 consoles. But clearly the publisher feels there’s money to be made here, and judging by the response, it’s not wrong.
Are you planning to pick up these original Black Ops games when they deploy in July? Are there any other classic Call of Dutys you’d like to see ported to modern PlayStation hardware? Let us know below.
