Session: Skate Sim dev crea-ture Studios is swapping shove-its for shapeshifting in its new top-down action game, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Rageborn.
This is loosely inspired by the tabletop role-playing game of the same name, although it’s anchoring its experience around the fact you can change forms at will.
In the full game you’ll have three options to choose from:
- Homid
- The human form. Excels at ranged weapons, firearms and crossbows. Use mobility to your advantage with the kyoketsu shoge.
- Lupus
- The wolf form. Agile and swift, ideal for exploration, stealth, and silent takedowns.
- Crinos
- The ultimate war form. Unleash devastation in close combat with Rage-fueled combos. Smash through obstacles and access new areas.
As explained in the video above, you’ll need to mix-and-match these types to progress.
The Homid, for example, is best equipped for dealing with ranged enemies, like drones. Meanwhile, the Lupus is more mobile, so may be a better form for platforming or navigation.
Here’s how the press release sets up the story:
“What can two students do in the face of the apocalypse? When his eco-activist friend is gunned down before his eyes, Taylor’s true nature is revealed in a tsunami of blood. He becomes a monster, a werewolf – a champion of the Earth. Thus begins a quest for vengeance and identity across the wild expanses of Alaska.”
The game’s due out in 2027, and we can’t help but feel it all looks a bit glib and dreary. But it’s early footage on display here, and there’s certainly potential in the shape-shifting gameplay.
We’re sure the dev will have a lot more to show in the lead up to launch next year.
