Guwahati, June 14: In a major setback for the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), a group of 20 Lok Sabha MPs on Sunday informed Speaker Om Birla of their decision to break away from the party and merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party (NCP).
The announcement was made by Trinamool MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar after a meeting with the Speaker, during which the MPs submitted a formal letter seeking separate seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha.
“We, the twenty MPs elected from the AITC, met the Speaker and submitted a letter requesting to sit separately. These twenty MPs constitute more than two-thirds of our total strength. We are merging with the Nationalist Citizens Party,” Dastidar told reporters.
The claim that the group represents more than two-thirds of the party’s Lok Sabha strength could prove significant in determining the status of the breakaway faction under parliamentary rules.
According to Dastidar, the MPs have decided to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party and function as a separate bloc in Parliament.
In another significant political development, she indicated that the newly merged group would support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.
“We will work for the nation and extend support to the NDA government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” she said.
The move signals a dramatic realignment in national politics and threatens to weaken the Trinamool Congress’s strength in the Lok Sabha. It could also have wider implications for opposition unity, while potentially bolstering the ruling alliance’s position in Parliament.
