Dibrugarh, April 30: Marking a key milestone in one of India’s largest hydroelectric projects, two crucial diversion tunnels of the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project were inaugurated on Wednesday.
Constructed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T Construction), the tunnels are expected to significantly speed up dam construction by enabling the diversion of river flow—an essential step before major structural work begins.
Narendra Kumar, Executive Director of the Dibang Multipurpose Project (DMP), thanked L&T for completing the tunnels within the stipulated timeline. He said the development would substantially accelerate construction activities and improve the overall pace of project execution.

Pradip Kumar Mahanti, Administrative Head and Industrial Relations (IR) at L&T, highlighted the engineering and logistical challenges involved in building the tunnels, citing difficult terrain and demanding working conditions at the project site.
He also commended NHPC Limited for its project management and coordination, which ensured steady progress despite the challenges.
Once completed, the Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh is expected to play a significant role in power generation, flood control, and regional development.
