Shillong, May 22: Deputy Chief Minister and four-time Nartiang MLA Sniawbhalang Dhar on Thursday dismissed VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit’s suggestion that he may contest from Nartiang in 2028, saying every candidate has the right to fight elections and he does not “own” the constituency.
“When the 2028 election comes, why should we invite somebody? Everybody is free to contest,” Dhar told reporters when asked about Basaiawmoit’s remarks.
“Mr Sniawbhalang will contest, the UDP will contest, the BJP will also, the VPP will also contest. But I will say only one thing — in my constituency, anyone can contest. I cannot stop them,” he said.
Rejecting the notion that rivals need his clearance, Dhar said, “Why do you need to seek permission from me? I am not the owner of the constituency; I am the MLA of the constituency. Anybody can come and contest.”
On whether the NPP’s alliance with the BJP would hurt its chances in 2028, Dhar said voters would judge on merit.
“You see, there is no challenge in 2028. The people of the state know whom to vote and whom not to vote,” he said.
He defended the tie-up with the BJP as beneficial for the state. “Working with the BJP together, the ideology is different, and of course we will get development from the central government,” he said.
Dhar projected stability for the NPP in the next Assembly polls. “BJP will get their own seat, maybe plus minus, and NPP I think as of now more than 30. So I think we will retain the same seats only,” he said.
Basaiawmoit had recently indicated the VPP could field him from Nartiang in 2028.
