Imphal, May 20: A delegation of Tangkhul Naga tribals from the Sinakeithei Village Authority in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Wednesday met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at his official bungalow and urged the government to deploy state police forces, including the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), in their village amid the prevailing tension in the state.

The delegation, accompanied by Ram Muivah, MLA of the ruling Naga People’s Front, also sought adequate manpower for the Sinakeithei police station and proper functioning of the existing Sub-Divisional Collector’s (SDC) office in the area.

The villagers said repeated attacks by armed men on Sinakeithei village in recent months had created an atmosphere of fear, insecurity and distress. They urged the government to ensure proper security arrangements and provide humanitarian relief and essential commodities to affected residents.

The Sinakeithei Village Authority further requested security cover along the road connecting Mahadev and Sinakeithei village. The delegation also raised demands for improved healthcare facilities and infrastructure development in the region.

Responding to the demands, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh said disarming all forms of firearms across the state was an urgent necessity.
He said peace remained the only solution to the ongoing crisis in Manipur and appealed to community leaders to persuade youths to abandon violence and work towards reconciliation.

The Chief Minister cited late South African leader Nelson Mandela as an example of leadership that helped restore peace despite deep racial conflict.

Khemchand Singh also said the government was working to create employment opportunities in non-government sectors through skill development initiatives for youths.

The villagers expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for deploying two companies of the Border Security Force in the Sinakeithei area. They also appreciated the state government for constructing the inter-village road connecting Sinakeithei with Ukhrul district headquarters and sanctioning a Bailey bridge over the Ihang river.
