Shillong, April 14: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday chaired a series of high-level review meetings to assess progress across key sectors under the state government’s Mission 10 framework, with a strong push on infrastructure, environmental sustainability, cultural research, and preparations for the National Games 2027.Meghalaya CM reviews progress on cleanliness, National Games & infrastructure projects

The review, held in Shillong with senior ministers and top officials, brought together departments including transport, forest and environment, arts and culture, urban affairs, and teams linked to the upcoming Games. The Chief Minister took stock of ongoing initiatives and called for faster, outcome-driven implementation across sectors.

Urban transformation in Shillong emerged as a central priority. Stressing the need to maximise economic potential and public value, Sangma directed officials to adopt innovative models such as public-private partnerships while ensuring efficient land use. He said prime urban spaces should be developed into vibrant commercial and public hubs, integrating mobility, commerce, and community spaces.

Connectivity and transport were flagged as critical enablers. Reviewing the functioning of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation, the Chief Minister emphasised strengthening last-mile connectivity and improving public transport usage through targeted support measures.
Environmental sustainability featured prominently in the discussions. The Chief Minister underlined that development must align with ecological protection and long-term balance. Departments were asked to accelerate afforestation efforts, strengthen wildlife conservation, and address human-animal conflict while ensuring that such initiatives also generate livelihoods for local communities.

He also called for stricter enforcement against illegal activities such as mining and smuggling, alongside better use of technology and monitoring systems. Promotion of eco-tourism through professional management and partnerships was highlighted as a key opportunity.

On the cultural front, the government reviewed a proposal for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary study of the history and origins of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities, aimed at strengthening documentation and research.

A major thrust was placed on developing high-value sectors, particularly agarwood and essential oils. The state is planning a Centre of Excellence to support cultivation, processing, and exports, with a market-driven approach and private sector participation to boost farmer incomes and employment.

Preparations for the National Games 2027 were also reviewed in detail. With over 1,200 athletes currently in training, the Chief Minister stressed the timely completion of sports infrastructure and high-quality arrangements for participants, reaffirming the government’s commitment to successfully host the event and build a lasting sports legacy.

Cleanliness and urban management under the Clean Meghalaya Mission were another key focus area. The Chief Minister called for practical interventions, improved waste management systems, and stronger community and youth participation. Progress in bio-remediation at the Marten landfill site and efforts to expand waste collection beyond municipal limits were also assessed.
