At an elevation of around 14,000 feet in Ladakh, among the mountains of light and rugged terrain, there appears to be something miraculous: a place that even bends gravity. The magnetic bend of the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar highway has become the object of many discussions because of its strange name and equally odd nature.
It sounds like something right out of a fairy tale; automobiles actually go uphill by themselves even without engines running. Could there possibly be a giant magnet hiding under the earth at Magnetic Hill, or does it have anything to do with optical illusions?
The authorities have demarcated a point at Magnetic Hill. When tourists park their vehicles inside the box in neutral gear, the vehicle slowly begins to move upward at a speed of 10 to 20 km/h. This is natural for anyone to be surprised by, as gravity dictates that things should roll downward, not upward.
