Guwahati, May 23: A new pattern of theft has come to light in Guwahati, triggering concern among residents after a woman allegedly gained the trust of families by working as a domestic helper before fleeing with cash and jewellery.
The modus operandi surfaced after police arrested a husband-wife duo accused of carrying out multiple thefts across the city by posing as household workers.
According to police, the accused used fake names and addresses to secure jobs in households before targeting the families.
A police official said theft cases linked to the duo had been reported from several parts of Guwahati, including Noonmati, Fancy Bazar, Birubari and Basistha.
“The latest incident took place in the Fancy Bazar area, where a woman identified as Dipali Das alias Jonali was working as a domestic helper at a residence. After staying there for a few months and winning the family’s trust, she allegedly broke open an almirah and fled with gold jewellery,” the official said.
He added, “During the investigation, we detained a man identified as Bhupen Kumar Singh from Pamohi, and based on his confession, we apprehended Dipali Das alias Jonali.”
Police said the stolen jewellery was allegedly sold at Bharat Sonar’s shop for around Rs 3 lakh.
Bharat Sonar was also arrested from Byrnihat in connection with the case.
