SOPA Flags Misleading Edible Oil Pack Sizes; Government Mulls Ban on Non-Standard Packaging

There’s a huge debate going on about edible oil packaging right now. SOPA, a major soybean group, claims there are inconsistent package sizes that mislead consumers. The government is thinking of changing how oil is packaged soon.

Reports show that many oil firms use unusual sizes like 850 ml, 875 ml, 900 ml, and 950 ml. They might not be allowed to sell these sizes anymore. Experts argue that having so many different pack sizes makes it tough for shoppers to really compare prices between brands. Consumers often just check the price tag without considering the quantity.

Vivek Puri, head of Puri Oil Mills Limited and the man behind the P Mark mustard oil brand, shared that he’s pleased the Indian government is tackling this issue of odd-sized oil packages. So, they support the efforts to standardize the packaging.

He said, for many years, we have been consistently emphasizing that consumers have the right to clear, transparent, and comparable pricing. Standardized pack sizes will help consumers make informed decisions and ensure that competition is based on quality, purity, and value, rather than packaging practices.”
