In his first speech in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) said that the House should treat the opinions of all political parties equally, regardless of their strength in the House.
Mr. Vijay made these remarks while extending his greetings to the newly elected Speaker, J.C.D. Prabhakar, and Deputy Speaker, M. Ravisankar.

“All are equal here. Be it a party that has one elected member or the members from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, who constitute the highest count, all must be treated equally. The House should function as the heart and brain, by accepting good thoughts and rejecting those that are not,” Mr. Vijay said, while reading from a prepared speech.
“Good values, such as respecting human beings, should be instituted beyond politics. The Tamil culture must be hailed,” he said, further hoping that the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker would protect the traditions, glory, and dignity of the House.
Pointing out how the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition followed tradition by escorting the new Speaker to the Chair by holding his hands, Mr. Vijay recalled how the practice originated in the United Kingdom before being adopted here.
In a lighter vein, Mr. Vijay said how there was hesitation to accept the Speaker post and underlined how in the U.K., the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition had to symbolically “drag” the Speaker to the Chair, who would otherwise find a way to evade the post. Mr. Vijay, also the TVK president, assured the Chair that legislators from his party would assist him.
