Guwahati, May 15: The Congress party’s appointment of V.D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala is sending ripples of political discussion beyond the borders of the state. Analysts and observers are already drawing parallels between this move and the party’s earlier actions that led to influential regional leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma leaving.
Despite Sarma having no direct link to Kerala politics, his political trajectory has unexpectedly reappeared at the forefront of debates surrounding the Congress leadership’s most recent decision. Political circles are increasingly viewing the appointment of Satheesan not simply as a selection of leader, but also as a sign that the Congress might be actively attempting to avoid a repeat of the blunders that caused powerful regional leaders to defect over the last decade.

Satheesan, formerly the Leader of Opposition in Kerala, was reportedly heavily supported by both newly elected Congress legislators and the grassroots leaders within the state unit. His ascension is seen by many as an acknowledgment of organizational strength and local acceptability rather than simply being the high command’s choice. This distinction has become politically relevant as many Congress crises emerged from a conflict between regional strongholds and the party high command.
Political commentators immediately recalled the case of Himanta Biswa Sarma, who eventually left the Congress following years of internal discord and subsequently emerged as one of the BJP’s most potent leaders in the Northeast. The exit continues to be seen as one of Congress’s most significant political losses in the eastern part of India.
The comparisons do not end there. Leaders such as Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot were also symbolic of a growing resentment amongst younger regional leaders who felt constrained by the party structure. Scindia eventually switched to the BJP and played a crucial role in the downfall of the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh, while Pilot’s rebellion in Rajasthan exposed deep internal conflicts within the party. Against this backdrop, the selection of Satheesan is now perceived by many as the Congress leadership’s effort to prioritize consensus and legislative support over proximity to Delhi.
Earlier, sources in Kerala politics suggested that senior leader K.C. Venugopal, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, was among the front-runners for the chief minister’s post. Concurrently, discussions in political circles highlighted Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s strong endorsement of Satheesan’s nomination. This particular aspect has gained attention, as many within the Congress strongly believe the party cannot afford more departures of politically ambitious regional leaders while it already faces organizational challenges in several parts of the country. The Kerala appointment thus carries significant symbolic weight beyond state politics. For the party’s cadre, this is perhaps indicative of a potential shift in how it manages its influential state units and leadership aspirations, whereas for critics it merely serves as a testament to the enduring shadow of past departures over the Congress leadership. In essence, even years later, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s departure from Congress continues to shape political calculations within the party.
