Alphonso Davies isn’t ready to put a timeline on his return, but Canada’s captain remains hopeful that he can still play a significant role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to reporters on Monday after rejoining the Canadian men’s national team as he continues his recovery from injury, Davies said he’s focused on taking his rehabilitation “day-by-day” while supporting the squad however he can.
“It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running,” Davies said after Canada beat Uzbekistan 2-0 in a friendly. “I’m happy to be home, and I’m happy to be with the boys and support them, whether it’s on or off the pitch.”
Davies suffered a hamstring injury while playing in a Champions League semifinal match for Bayern Munich back on May 8. He also missed a pair of March friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia in Toronto with a hamstring strain.
The 25-year-old added that discussions with head coach Jesse Marsch have centred on allowing his recovery process to dictate any potential return.
“We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple of days,” Davies said. “I just continue my rehab, my progression, and see how I’m feeling day by day, step by step.”
Canada plays one more friendly match against Ireland in Montreal on Friday before opening the tournament against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12.
While Davies stopped short of guaranteeing he could play later in the tournament, he also wasn’t ruling anything out.
“Time will tell,” he said when asked whether he believes he can return by the final. “All depending on how the rehab goes.”
Canada is keeping that possibility in mind as well. Marsch said the team is motivated to give its captain an opportunity to feature at some point during the tournament, even if that means waiting until the knockout rounds.
The Canadian coach noted that while there is hope Davies could return during the group stage, every additional match Canada plays would provide the defender with more time to recover fully.
“We want to give him a chance to be a big player in this tournament for us,” Marsch said.
For now, Davies’ focus remains on recovery, but Canada’s ambitions may ultimately determine whether one of its most important players gets the opportunity to make a late-tournament impact.
